The title "WATERSHED” describes a series of works involving a percussionist and a complex instrumental set-up that surrounds the performer. There is a version without technological elaboration (I), one with an instrumental ensemble (III), and one with multi-channel electroacoustic cues (IV). Percussionist Mathias Reumert approached me in 2018, asking if I could consider a stereo version of the electroacoustic component, a move that would greatly enlarge the work’s dissemination. I discussed this with my technical collaborator, Jacob Sundstrom, and we devised an approach for simulating the effect of reverberation in a novel way that I called “shimmer”. In Watershed V, the dimensionality of the original is attenuated, but the work's “usefulness” is enlarged.
