VOLUME 5:
In 1988, I encountered John Ashbery’s monumental statement, Self-Portrait in a Convex Mirror. I found it fascinating and also inscrutable, so I set out to “understand it” by writing music arising out of its images. Six phrases from his poem became titles for the movements of a string orchestra work the comprised, essentially, a meditation on the poet’s subject: the relationship between artists and their worlds. The poem mentions two musical works, the Sibelius Violin Concerto, and the Mahler Ninth Symphony, and I took the pitch structure of my work from these works. – Roger Reynolds |
